In 2026, the Augusta Bird Club launched this program, installing nest boxes to support the declining Barn Owl population in Augusta County. This hauntingly beautiful species is declining because of the lack of suitable nesting sites. Many of the traditional barns and silos they've used have either fallen down or been renovated/replaced, which no longer allows the birds access. Combined with the loss of their preferred hunting habitat, such as hayfields, pastures, and meadows, due to modern farming and development, the American Barn Owl needs a little conservation help.

Based on extensive research, our Conservation Committee selected a specific nest box design and identified appropriate habitat, then approached landowners, who responded so enthusiastically that we spent our initial funding commitment in just a few months. We now seek additional support to build on our early successes. The approximate cost to install one Barn Owl nest box is $400, and donations of any size add up quickly.
