In 2026, the Augusta Bird Club launched this program, installing nest boxes to help offset the decreasing population of Barn Owls in Augusta County. This hauntingly beautiful species is declining because of habitat loss, as modern farming and development have reduced open fields and pastures where they hunt for voles and other prey, and because traditional nesting sites are lost as old structures are torn down.

Based on extensive research, our Conservation Committee selected nesting boxes and defined appropriate nesting sites, then approached landowners, who responded so enthusiastically that we spent our initial funding commitment in just a few months. We now seek additional support to build on our early successes. The approximate cost to install one Barn Owl nest box is $400, and donations of any size add up quickly.
